13th February 2025

It feels like there isn’t much of interest to keep our loyal readers entertained at the moment, though we’re as busy as ever. I do need to rectify an oversight from last Friday – a picture of the onion working its magic on my centipede sting!

And of course you all want to be reassured that the Beast has been restored to full health. Dr Brian performed field surgery to fit the spare belt, so I managed to complete the mowing, but here I must introduce another of our new friends: Carl. I knew he was the ace medic who had repaired and serviced the mower for the last owner, and I managed to track down his contact details a couple of weeks ago. Well, what a gentleman. Nothing was too much trouble. He collected and returned the mower at no charge (and remember this thing is about the size and weight of a small family hatchback) and lovingly healed the various injuries I had inflicted upon it. Not only that, but he and his son came over on Monday to fine tune it after last Friday’s hiccup and refused to take any payment for their time and trouble. It was all I could do to press a couple of cold ginger ales on them for the homeward journey. “Money isn’t everything”. Good to meet people like that.

In between meetings and discussions this week with three plumbers, two roofers, two solar water heating companies, two generator technicians, two bathroom fitters, two pool contractors, one carpenter, one window fitter, one feral cat catcher, one wedding planner and one property manager (just a typical few days at Pollards – no wonder we go to bed early 💤 ) we have managed to make time for a couple of enjoyable activities. Alongside a little socialising and beach time last weekend we attended our first auction of the year and bagged two delightful bargains, this one now having pride of place on our front porch, even though it’s far more Mediterranean than Caribbean. Who cares? All the patio furniture we inherited came from Indonesia!

Today we downed tools before lunch to make our first pilgrimage of the year to hallowed ground:

Barbados Pride were taking on Jamaica Scorpions in the West Indies Championship. Amazingly, entry was free. To a first-class cricket match featuring several West Indies international players. This resulted in a modest but healthy crowd for a midweek afternoon, with a warm atmosphere and access to the best seats in the house. Delicious fish cakes, fried marlin, ice cold Banks and glorious sunshine. In February. Even Lord’s would struggle to compete with that. Magic!

Still remember visiting Kensington Oval with Nikki in 2001 to see the first day of Australia vs the Windies…. You’ll love it! I said…. she lasted half an hour.
Looking back at the scorecard the WI bowling was not its strongest line up!

    1. A happy memory for her I’m sure! I see Vasbert Drakes bowled for WI in that match. Currently Barbados coach.
