“Packed my bags last night, pre-flight…”

19th September 2024

Hmmm – will I have to pay royalties to Elton and Bernie for using that line? If their lawyers get in touch this blog will be reaching more people than we expected.

I used to be a last-minute kind of guy with packing. My career didn’t help – my record late finish in the office was 2.30am before departure in the morning, and I still hadn’t packed. Retirement has improved matters and this time we have both excelled ourselves – we don’t fly for more than a week yet but are 95% done. A huge shout out to our great mates Mr and Mrs D who have lent us two enormous suitcases so we can cram in as much as we can. My partner in crime excels at this – I nearly posted a photo of the open cases filled with lovingly-rolled clothing snuggled up cosily. The backpacking years of the 80s and 90s clearly taught us valuable life skills.

Marty and Wendy have now done their last big deal and our attorney is holding the funds required to ‘close’ the transaction at the beginning of October. What a relief. There are quite a lot of details still to iron out – and here we return to ‘line marking’. Apparently we have to pace the grounds of the property with a surveyor who will point out the boundaries and identify any discrepancies from the plan. I suspect some weed whacker fun may be coming up. Obviously we can only do this once we’re ‘on island’ but before completion, so what with appointments to see our new bank and attorney to squeeze in too, we will be busy on arrival.

On the home front the nocturnal scratching and generosity with little presents has continued, but I too have been leaving gifts and have a 100% nightly success rate with my secret peanut butter recipe (which has one hell of a kick if you’re a little fella, a bit like Bajan hot sauce). It’s a war of attrition. Let’s hope we can claim the final victory before we blast off.
