Goodbye West Wales/hwyl fawr Sir Benfro

5th September 2024

It will be obvious to you all dear readers who is writing which bit of this post!! To all those non Welsh speakers don’t worry I don’t know what he is saying either. You could cut and paste into google translate. I did try to learn, we were hoping to have a family and what with a very lovable but rabid protector of the Welsh language as a mother-in-law, I started Welsh lessons. I used www.saysomethingin.com and can highly recommend them. I was really enjoying it, gaining confidence especially with “I’ve shut the window” and “I’m sorry I don’t speak Welsh very well, but I’m trying” Anyway once I outed myself by giving it a go, I got so fed up of having my pronunciation corrected (and not by my MIL) I gave up! Turns out I never needed it to speak to our children anyway.

The Welsh house has now sold; ironically, given the amount of fuss there is about local people not being able to buy locally, to a non-Welsh speaking Englishman moving to Wales from Surrey. We celebrated with Sunday lunch and a Tuscan GnT at the pub. Now we are solvent again and have funds for the solar panels and a new well pump. I have been really surprised how un-sad I have been leaving our base there. I can revel in the extraordinarily happy times we have had there with both sides of the family over the 16yrs we have have had a foothold in the area. We can always go back as proper tourists.

Pan oeddwn yn bedair oed ym 1969 dechreuodd fy rhieni mynd a ni ar wyliau haf yr holl ffordd o Lundain i draeth Poppit ar y ffin rhwng sir Benfro a sir Ceredigion. Nefoedd ar ddaear i ddau fachgen bach! Roedd yn teimlo (mae dal yn teimlo!) fel ochr y byd. Safle nesa? Iwerddon. Oedd fy hen fodryb ac ewythr yn byw lawr yr heol yn Aberteifi, a mae fy atgofion o’r amseroedd hynny yn felys dros ben. Roedd yn fraint cael y cyfle i brynu ty yn Llandudoch yn 2008. Mwy o atgofion braf ers hynny – ac yn awr mae’r antur wedi dod i ben. Ymlaen at y nesa! Felly hwyl fawr am y tro i sir Benfro – ond byth i Gymru.

ON: mae’n debyg mae fi sydd ar fai am beth ddigwyddodd efo’r hanes dysgu Cymraeg. Yn amlwg dwi wedi tyfu a gwella fel person ers hynny!
