Chuck out the Chintz

9th October 2024

An old IKEA marketing phrase that I have stolen.

Today has been “tackle the linen cupboard” day and CHUCK out the CHINTZ day …. I’ve been looking forward to this one SO much…..

Ever since we viewed the property and on planning our move it has been clear her taste was not mine. Nothing wrong with that but heavy floral, damaskesque curtains and the accompanying peach polyester voile net curtains are not my style. In addition they block out cooling breezes and light and IMHO are not in keeping with a tropical environment. They all needed to go.

We knew there was stuff to find…. on key day as we flung things in a pile, looking for some 1/2 decent king sized sheets, the polyester made itself known … sweat inducing plastic … be gone. However today was comprehensive … what do we have and what do we need? The holiday cottages also need sheets and curtains so a stocktake was begun.

Actually there are some acceptable Egyptian cotton sheets, some polyester, quite a lot of stained (yuk) faded, torn, frayed and bin-worthy linen (if you can call it that) or potential dusters. The piles grow.

There are also about 70 (poetic licence!) black bin bags of other stuff…. Stained lumpy pillows, floral valances, bobbly mattress protectors. The bin bags are so old they fall apart, stick to our sweaty palms and we have a black plastic confetti storm to tackle. Getting close to sense of humour failure we happen upon numerous white linen sheer curtains and a huge mossie net…… eureka.

Cooling cotton sheets, decent bath towels and beach towels are added to our shopping list. We have chucked chucked chucked.

We drive our new cleaner (she is a marvel) home and on the way back we celebrate with a late afternoon swim on a new beach. Shark Hole, St Philip. We can’t believe we have never been here before. Another day of achievement…. Lush.
