A week is a long time in Pol….s

28th September 2025

Friday (19th September)

The day after termite Armageddon, and we had a day off because we expected workmen on Saturday and planned to work whilst they were here. So we kicked back, chilled out at home and managed four dips in the pool before lunch! It’s really lovely having the time to enjoy the property on days like that. A taste of things to come when the workload slackens. We then did something special – in early evening we took a couple of beers in our cooler to Miami beach on the south coast and had a swim in the rapidly fading light. Anyone familiar with the tropics will know how quickly night falls here, but there was plenty of daylight left to illuminate a large turtle just a couple of yards in front of us as we stepped into the water. Magic! We then enjoyed some ice cold Banks in the sea under a spectacular rosy thunderhead cloud before getting changed in pitch darkness back on the beach and walking to the Oistins Fish Fry for some absolutely delicious mahi mahi – oh, all right, and another couple of Banks:

Saturday

Sunday

Day off

Monday

We finally finished our wall cleaning and wood/metal painting work in the mill. A hot hard slog involving masks, rubber gloves, garden hose, ladders, bleach, Bar Keepers Friend, brushes, roller, primer and gloss, but so satisfying and a great improvement. And no symptoms of histoplasmosis as yet – surely we’re out of the incubation period by now 🤞.

Tuesday

Well. It’s the rainy season, but it’s been exceptionally dry since our return several weeks ago. Tuesday put that right. Torrential downpours on and off all day. The wettest day we’ve ever had here. Unfortunately this revealed that the recent roof repairs were not quite perfect. Running around with towels was a little deflating, but our top roofer has responded very positively. We’ll get there!

Wednesday

Extraction of a pesky nail and speedy tyre repair by Automotive Art, a car wash from the SteamBoyz, and an afternoon shopping trip for the project before visiting a new beach bar on the west coast. This sums up our lives – rum sour sundowners and hardware store loyalty card 😆

Thursday

A full day crisscrossing the island buying taps, homewares, groceries and goodness knows what else. It’s all a blur.

Friday

(that’s more than a week, but I’ll allow it – Ed.)

A full day’s gardening with our ace horticultural team, and before we know it…the weekend.

The roll of honour for our visitors during this period is:

Pest controllers

Roofers

Solar heating team

Bathroom project manager

Plumber

Stonemasons

Tiler

Gardeners

Cleaner

Gate welder

Gate electric/electronic/security mechanical arm designer/consultant/engineer/fitter, known to everyone on the island as ‘Gateman Bobby’ (his name’s David 🤷)

We even had a consultation with our attorney and planning adviser.

TGIF 💤 – no wonder it’s taken till Sunday to post this 😆
