While the boss was writing the last blog post I was being interviewed in the language of heaven on the BBC about our Caribbean adventure. It was probably more Radio Ga Ga by the time I’d finished, but it was fun – and fantastic to get the opportunity. A huge shout out to our lovely friend NW who has been a great enthusiast and supporter of our madcap plans. She spoke to a friend who works for Radio Cymru, and in no time at all I’m on air. I will admit to having had to look up the Welsh for ‘missionary’ and ‘engineer’ as part of my preparation – that gives a sense of the back story I wanted to share.
Even before I hit the airwaves, a couple of my WhatsApp groups – totally unconnected – are abuzz with news of my imminent star turn, and many friends tune in. After the interview our daily website stats spike to their highest level yet, and I receive an email (via Radio Cymru!) from the daughter of an old friend of my mother’s who I haven’t seen for well over 50 years. The power of the media – and we haven’t even got onto ‘social’ yet.
The Welsh-speaking community in Wales and London is relatively small and close-knit, and this is very similar indeed to the West Indian community I have come to know over the past couple of decades. In this regard Barbados will definitely feel like a home from home. The language is equally musical!
Our last couple of days at home are manic – including weighing our suitcases for the 20th time. They’re heavy enough all right…
Right. Ready for blastoff now!
