Can you make a blog post out of a roti skin?

3rd March 2025

That sounds like a riddle.

I’ve never been to Dubai but know of its reputation for air conditioned malls. I reckon Barbados could give it a run for its money. A little less glitzy, perhaps – but there are loads of them. Our frequent forays up and down the island plundering the hardware and homeware stores often involve grabbing lunch on the go. Rather than patronising the familiar international fast food outlets we far prefer the local options, and our hands down favourite is this gem in Sky Mall at Haggatt Hall:

Always a healthy queue of locals – good sign. Today (in between an appetiser of bathroom mixer taps and a dessert of five toilet seats) we tucked into freshly made beef and pumpkin rotis in dhal puri skins. No matter that this involved getting elbow deep in the rich filling and necessitated a wash up afterwards – they were divine. Sweet and juicy. The staff probably remember us from an earlier visit in the rainy season when we were caught in a tropical downpour: in the fifty yards between car and mall we might as well have been snorkelling. Our bedraggled appearance wasn’t helped in my case by slipping on the tarmac and falling flat on my arse in the flood while cars nosed past my ear. The mall’s air conditioning set our teeth chattering as the water ran off us, drawing a few amused glances at our slicked back hair and wet pants. Thank goodness for a delicious warming roti.

On our arrival home today we were greeted by our ever-vigilant guard lizard above the kitchen door. Very reassuring. Check out the top left hand corner of the first photo:

One of our garden toads was then going to join us for dinner on the patio but suddenly came over all shy at the last minute:

And that wraps up our day as neatly as a roti skin.

Has the riddle been answered? You decide 😉
